To ape • mimic/imitate
APE-APE explores mimicry and masking, drawing on the experience of concealing neurodivergent traits to conform. The series features life-size crocheted chimpanzee skins—identical in form but unique in execution—created using my freestyle crochet technique. Each adopts the bold colourways of childhood pop icons like Super Mario and The Incredible Hulk, visually distorting the form and blurring the line between recognition and disguise.
These visual distortions act as metaphors for masking—both a survival mechanism and a means of erasure. The skins are displayed in tight boxes, reflecting the pressure to ‘fit’ into spaces never designed for them. Through humour and subversion, APE-APE invites reflection on identity, self-expression, and the facades we construct—highlighting the tension between visibility and concealment. The use of nostalgic imagery fosters personal connection while provoking deeper questions about perception and belonging.
In an era increasingly defined by digital replication, this work is a testament to the enduring value of handmade creation. The irregularities in my crochet celebrate imperfection, individuality, and the irreplaceable nature of human touch.
APE-APE stands as a quiet act of resistance—challenging conformity, celebrating neurodivergence, and honouring the beauty of difference.
