Shauna Richardson made a name creating life-size crochet sculptures—a practice that she invented and went on to trademark Crochetdermy®.
Crochetdermy® exists in the space between craft and contemporary art, and often explores boundaries and cultural perception. Over the years Shauna built an extensive body of realistic, life-size animals created using the unlikely medium of crochet. Each animal is posed and presented as a hunting trophy, a comment on the endangered status of both wildlife, and what was at the time an endangered craft.
Her handmade work celebrates the power of individuality and the beauty of imperfection, qualities that will only gain significance as we move forward into an increasingly digitised world.
